Lithium itself is a soft, silvery-white alkali metal. It is the lightest metal and the lightest solid element. Like all alkali metals, lithium is highly reactive and flammable. So this isn’t something you’d want just laying around your house. Especially if you have a toddler running around like I do... So Lithium is a metal so it must be mined right, like copper? Well, not exactly. It’s true lithium can be mined from rocks but mostly it’s found in brine pools. Lithium is also present in seawater but there aren’t any commercially viable methods of extracting it at this time As an aside when you see a meme floating around the internet showing a giant mine where lithium comes from, it’s a lie. As of 2017, most of the world's lithium production is in South America, where lithium-containing brine is extracted from underground pools and concentrated by solar evaporation. The standard extraction technique is to evaporate water from brine. Each batch takes from 18 to 24 months. With so much demand for lithium it’s a fair question to ask... Are Tesla and others doomed? Well…not really The US Geological Survey’s report for 2017 shows that "Worldwide lithium production increased by an estimated 12% in 2016 in response to increased lithium demand for battery applications. Production in Argentina increased nearly 60%, primarily owing to a new brine operation; the leading Argentine producer also increased production. A producer in Chile reported that its production rose by 20%. Two small Australian spodumene operations, one new and one inactive since 2013, planned to begin commercial concentrate production by year end. Worldwide lithium production capacity was reported to be 49,400 tons in 2015; capacity utilization was estimated to be 64% in 2015 and 71% in 2016. Based on average projections by producers and industry analysists of about 14% growth worldwide, consumption of lithium in 2016 is projected to be about 37,800 tons, up from 33,300 tons in 2015. So the trend is going up, but when you look at the overall picture you find that owing to continuing exploration, lithium resources have increased substantially worldwide. Identified lithium resources in the United States, from continental brines, geothermal brines, hectorite, oil field brines, and pegmatites, have been revised to 6.9 million tons. Identified lithium resources in other countries have been revised to approximately 40 million tons. Identified lithium resources in Argentina and Bolivia are about 9 million tons each and in major producing countries are Australia, more than 2 million tons; Chile, more than 7.5 million tons; and China, approximately 7 million tons. Canada’s lithium resources are about 2 million tons. Congo (Kinshasa), Russia, and Serbia have resources of about 1 million tons each. Lithium resources in Brazil and Mexico are approximately 200,000 tons each and Austria, and Zimbabwe have more than 100,000 tons each. Beyond just producing more lithium, companies like Tesla have focused on creating a closed-loop battery recycling program since as early as 2011. So while Tesla drivetrains are rated to go 1M miles, and the batteries will likely last to last north of 350K miles, once the cars do get turned in, Tesla isn’t going to just throw away those precious metals. If you’re an investor in companies reliant on lithium for their batteries such as Tesla, Apple, Google, or any other company making electronics today, you shouldn’t worry about the supply chain. The company still has to sift through a pile of information collected by the Austrians back in the eighties, and it has done a bit of drilling to verify that data. “We’ve now got 6.3mln tonnes going over 1% lithium”, Sage said. The company is mulling two routes to production, and which route it takes depends on the testing the company is currently doing. If the ore is ready to be mined, then some production could be fast-tracked. Over the long term, by the end of 2018 or early 2019, the company should be in full production. “Our aim is to be the very first supplier of lithium from Europe, to Europe,” Sage said. “You’ve got a lot of suppliers coming from South America, Australia and North America, but the cost of transporting the material to Europe is expensive; if we can be the first producers in Europe, we can distribute the product throughout Europe for four or five dollars a tonne.”

Tracy Weslosky: Well as you know --- we agree with you, your deal with Ganfeng Lithium is substantial. I’m going to have you back up and reintroduce our audience to the actual deal that you have because I think it’s really going to affect your market valuation Kirill when our audience understands what this deal is. Kirill Klip: Yes, thank you; very, very interesting and important question. Ganfeng Lithium grown up from $3 million in sales in the year 2000 to more than $200 million in sales last year. Now we have basically lithium top 5 in the world with Albemarle number one, with SQM number two and now Ganfeng and another Chinese company, Tianqui push former three in the world, FMC, into the fifth place. Basically we are making business with $4.5 billion dollar market cap company from China, Ganfeng Lithium, which is now on field with four plays dependent on their searches. We were fortunate we started our business 7 years ago and this year actually we celebrated our fifth anniversary of our IPO with Ganfeng Lithium. Like you mentioned, we can call it the major deal in the whole lithium sector because we are the only one basically an exploration arm of a major lithium producing company. They spent two years studying all our projects, making all due diligences on our properties. Just look at top performing Tesla $TSLA which was taken down on bearish reports indicating potential production shortfalls. Remember the shorts have been squeezed from possibly $50, Tesla recently was trading close to $400 per share so its entitled to a pullback. Tesla may not be able to keep up with production targets if they do not secure supplies of lithium, cobalt and graphite. Most of this supply comes from South American sources which may be sold out past a certain date. Cobalt is coming from Congo where there are concerns of child slave labor in the mining areas. Graphite is mostly imported from China which is sable rattling in the South China Seas and their proxy N. Korea. Lithium and cobalt are in a strong price uptrend. Graphite like rare earths have been manipulated lower by the Chinese to prevent competition from N. American sources. Cobalts is breaking into new multi year highs and is really driving interest in the junior mining sector. I’ve been highlighting LiCo $LIC.V, First Cobalt $FCC.V and Cobalt Power $CPO.V which I own and they are website sponsors. These three companies above are very active and could announce significant developments concurrently with the Tesla Model 4 release which could be a major disruptor to the automobile industry as the Iphone was to the cell phone industry. We saw it with cell phones and internet, now it is the computerized self driving electric car. I wouldn’t be surprised if all of us are driving electric cars by 2030. As the Tesla Model 3 is released don’t be surprised to see an uptick in interest in the lithium, cobalt and graphite sector. In addition to the Model 3 news, major car companies such as Volvo, Volkswagon and BMW are committed towards electric motors. Volvo wants to be totally electric in two years. This is a huge news item which most investors are ignoring. They need to realize this transition of auto companies could create a major shift in the supply demand curve. Keep a close eye on China and its proxy N. Korea. There is a lot of tension in the South China Seas and this could boil over into the critical rare earths and graphite space needed desperately for renewable clean energy. Remember electric vehicles use a lot of graphite and rare earths. Now is the time to look at the rare earth survivors such as Ucore and Commerce. Notice Quest has gone bankrupt. Molycorp’s Mountain Pass is being stolen by the Chinese right under our noses. This is a travesty. Americans should write to their politicians and state they don’t want their mining and manufacturing industries sent overseas. We can mine rare earths, lithium, graphite and cobalt right here in North America. The rare earth market could bounce after the Molycorp and Quest bankruptcies. Things could get volatile with Trump and international relationships in Asia. Notice the major move in palladium in 2017 yet? Its outperformed mostly all asset classes. Guy Bourassa: Absolutely, I do agree with this. As a matter of fact, I’m sure that they also noted that the only commodity in the mining sector in the past 4-5 years that I’ve been seeing an increase in demand and an increase in sales price is lithium and the different lithium compounds. What I hear from the Chinese market and the producers around the world and the market analysts is that effectively there’s a very, very big shortage actually that is reflected by the spot price that we see in China that we’ve seen for the past 3-4 months. Some people are talking about even $15,000.00 U.S. for lithium carbonate on the spot price. Of course, the spot price does not represent the real contracts, long-term contracts, but it definitely shows that somebody is looking desperately for lithium carbonate at this time and that there is none. Tracy Weslosky: Obviously that is a lot of exciting news for us at InvestorIntel and our audience. Of course, Jack Lifton is telling me the real driver for the battery market is actually China. Of course, Nemaska Lithium has made a one of a kind deal with Johnson Matthey. And as an expert in understanding the demand for batteries, can you talk to us a little about what that demand really is or help enlighten us a little bit more on what the status is at this time? Guy Bourassa: I don’t quite agree with Jack about the fact that the market is in China. Production increases in China, but their batteries and cathode material is going outside in other markets so they’re producing these batteries, but the end-users are not, absolutely not presently in China. That’s maybe going to be growing there, but it’s already growing in Europe. It’s already growing in the United States, the electric vehicle. What’s even more interesting, because people don’t believe of the rapid growth and the adoption of the electric vehicles, they have to take into consideration that on a tonnage-wise energy storage is much more important than the electric vehicle adoption. You’re going to see at least two times the number of tons of lithium compounds required for the energy storage sector. E-Vehicles are the future Battery run cars, e-vehicles, green cars are taking the world by storm. We speak with Jochen Staiger, CEO of Swiss Resource Capital AG about the huge move forward in the automotive industry. Jochen tells us that according to research there were globally 2 million e-vehicles in 2016. This year we have already have 3.3 million e-vehicles on the roads. Furthermore the centre of automotive research suggests that there will be 9 million e-vehicles by 2020 and 75 million by 2025. When looking at the build up of the e-vehicles the metals they use are very interesting. For example the new E-Golf from Volkswagen uses 50KG of copper and in a Tesla there are 8KM of copper cables. The only issue in terms of the boom in e-vehicles and rechargeable batteries is the infrastructure. For battery run vehicles to succeed they will need 500km of real reach and 200km or reserve reach to hit the mass market successfully. China are currently building 10 giga factories. Germany are building 2, (Porsche and Daimler). The technology itself is not new, it is a 35 year old technology. Everyone can do it. The challenge now is improving on the technology to allow for more loading cycles, higher capacity and a faster charge. What stocks should I consider? When looking at how to best position yourself in the market to make the most of the boom. Jochen suggests looking at Lithium, Cobalt and Copper producers. Geographically Argentina, and Chile in Lithium are areas to focus on. Canada is the first country where you can purchase cobalt safely. Australia has lithium, nickel and copper and will continue to lead the commodity market. Copper is on of the top metals. It is important for all e-vehicles. Jochen signs off by saying that even with the positive move forward in the e-vehicle industry there are still problems. Many countries simply do not have the infrastructure for charging batteries. Many countries will need to invest in increasing the power supply demands. Finally Jochen tells us that oil will remain important for the next 20 years and that we will not see a drop in oil consumption for a long time. Right now there is only one small producing asset in Clayton Valley Nevada but there could be a lot more if a processing technology could make it somewhat competitive to the higher grade lithium brines in South America where supply is not as secure geopolitically. This technology could have critical importance to the USA as these gigafactories are relying on imported lithium from Argentina, Chile and Bolivia. Voltaic’s Green Energy Project has historical oil wells with high numbers of lithium right near Moab, Utah. To reenter these wells and take a sample is a fraction of the cost than drilling. Remember lithium is more about chemical processing rather than mining. If you look today most companies use the sun in the desert to separate lithium using evaporation. This is the traditional method that has been used for years. However, evaporation takes time and these large producers are mostly sold out for years. Non conventional processes have had challenges being economic removing impurities from the solution. However, the lithium price is soaring and technologies are improving. This technology could potentially open up some domestic brines all over the US especially the geothermal brines. They need to show that the brines can flow and then take samples where they can create a product. A small pilot plant will need to be build to prove that the chemcial processing can be done on a commercial scale. I wouldn’t be surprised with the Project Manager’s expertise and connections if end users are not yet interested to help fund development. As Voltaic progresses I expect their market cap to increase and the stock not staying under a dime at bottom fishing prices. In a recent news release Tom Currin, Voltaic Project Manager stated, “If successful, this process could create value from known resources in the US and globally. The company is incorporating selective techniques, used commercially in mineral extraction and water treatment, in a novel fashion to achieve a result not yet seen in the Lithium process sector.” Mr. Currin has over 35 years of chemical engineering experience in the Lithium and Specialty Chemicals Industry. He has an extensive background in process development, project management implementation and Lithium extraction having managed projects in Chile, Peru, Mexico, Canada and the United States.
